People make the difference

Whether you work or volunteer with us, or donate money to South West Community Chaplaincy, you’re helping to show prisoners that you care about their future.

Many people in prison may never have felt cared for. They may never have felt any self-worth. By showing them that they matter, we encourage them to start believing it themselves. It sounds like a small thing, but it really can turn lives around.

Volunteer with us

SWCC volunteers come from Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and are from all backgrounds and cultures. We have everyone from young people to retirees who support us.

Many of our volunteers share our Christian faith, while others are of another faith, or no faith. However, all our volunteers are in sympathy with the Christian ethos of community chaplaincy and have a strong desire to help others, and give our clients a second chance.

While we will provide you with all the training you need, being a good listener is a plus, as is having an open mind and a non-judgemental approach.

Please ensure you have time to give, and that you can be extremely reliable – many of our clients have been constantly let down by people around them so it’s crucial that we don’t do the same. Typically, volunteers give around 3 hours of their time each week.

Support us

As a charity we rely on the generosity of organisations and members of the public to provide our vital services. There are many ways you can donate to SWCC. Visit our support us page.

Work for us

We’re a small team of community chaplains based at the CoLab in Exeter. We are the initial contact with prisons and justice facilities, and we usually meet clients for the first time in prison. However, we also work with people who have already left prison, or who have served community sentences. We act as the interface between volunteers and the charity, as well as between the charity and our partner organisations in the community.
